A Sketch a DayA few tips to get you started

Want to increase plein air sketching but can’t find the time? Follow the tips below to create space in your routine.
Image
Pair together sketching and an outdoor activity you do on a regular basis. It might be gardening, walking or jogging etc I chose dog walking.
Image
Gather simple, easy to carry materials that you can use sitting or standing. I found a small concertina sketchbook and water soluble crayons worked well.

When you go on your outdoor activity, the goal is to make some marks in your sketchbook. You will probably manage a whole sketch but a few marks still count.
Image
Work quickly and don’t focus on the results. Sketch whatever draws your attention, it might be a whole landscape or a single flower.
Image
Persevere and don’t judge your efforts - they are quick sketches that will look even better later on.

To bring variety to your sketching practice, try laying collage on some of the pages before you go out.
See the video below of my Dog Walks Sketch Book!

Enjoy your new plein air practice, you will soon have lovely sketchbooks to treasure.

These are the materials I used : -

  • Small concertina sketchbook - Seawhite
  • Neocolour 11 crayons - caran d’ache
  • Water brush - Derwent
